Titanium Investment Casting

Australia’s First Titanium Vacuum Melting Foundry.

We proudly offer sovereign manufacturing capability for critical titanium components as Australia’s first titanium investment casting foundry. Our advanced facility can produce castings up to 25kg/50lbs in part weight, with pour weights of up to 50kg/110lbs.

We offer castings in three industry-standard titanium alloys: CP-2 (Commercial Purity), Ti 6-4 (Ti-6Al-4V) and Ti 6-2-4-2.

Titanium Vacuum Melting – The Process

The titanium vacuum melting process begins by loading a titanium electrode (the melt stock) into a sealed chamber. A preheated ceramic mold is also loaded into the chamber. The chamber is then evacuated to create a high vacuum environment, crucial to preventing titanium from reacting with oxygen and nitrogen. Using an electric arc into a water-cooled copper skull melter, the material is heated to temperatures exceeding 1700°C where it is fully molten.

Once melted, the titanium is poured into preheated ceramic moulds, with the entire process occurring under vacuum conditions to maintain metal quality and prevent contamination. This controlled environment ensures the production of superior castings with consistent material properties, minimal gas porosity, and excellent mechanical characteristics. The result is high-quality titanium components that meet the most demanding industry specifications.

Why Choose Titanium Investment Casting?

Superior Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Titanium is strong yet lightweight, making it ideal for applications where reduced mass is critical, such as in aerospace and defence.

Corrosion Resistance: Titanium alloys may resist corrosion from seawater, chemicals, and other harsh environments, ensuring lasting performance in industries such as oil, gas, and mining.

Biocompatible: Titanium’s biocompatibility makes it a valuable material for medical applications such as dental implants and prosthetics.

Investment Casting: The Ideal Solution for Complex Titanium Parts

While titanium offers remarkable benefits, its traditional manufacturing presents significant challenges. The material’s high melting point (1650°C) and reactivity with oxygen make welding without specialised equipment difficult, while its poor thermal conductivity complicates machining processes.

Investment casting effectively addresses these challenges by producing intricate, near-net-shape components under vacuum conditions. This approach minimises post-processing requirements, reduces costs, and shortens lead times while maintaining design flexibility and component integrity.
